A group of painters using a variety of mediums depict the stunning landscapes of Martha’s Vineyard. Working en plein air and in studios, inspired and challenged by the always changing light and color, each interprets the natural world in a different way.

“I have a deep reverence for the Earth.” Each of Liz Taft’s plein air paintings is a homage to the island. She strives to simplify what she sees, observe the subtle colors and capture the magic that she feels. liztaft.com
Raised in a family of artists, Lowely’s first employment was at the Metropolitan Museum where she was drawn to the classical traditions of painting. In the past decade after raising her family she has returned to primarily the vibrant medium of pastels.

Working on location keeps Judy Howells emotionally connected to the land and provides opportunities for both close observation and discovery. She looks for intimate painting locations, often vulnerable places at the edge of where man and nature intersect. In the summer she lives on Sengekontackett Pond, one of her favorite locations for plein air painting. “The transformational quality of light truly excites me and the love of nature is my real subject.”

An Islander by birth and now by choice, Marston Clough takes pleasure in the beauty that surrounds us. A microbiologist, then a high school science teacher, he started exploring art as an adult, drawing, then printmaking before turning to oils, now his primary medium. He paints both real and imagined landscapes, outside and in his studio.

June Schoppe
Aquinnah Sunset
June is always searching for a painting, for the light, an alluring composition, a story to tell and the iconic images of a place. Equally at home in the studio or en plein air, she uses oils to translate that search into works that speak of time and place, dreams and reminiscence, passing storm and serenity. juneschoppe.com
Kanta Lipsky
Mill Pond Dawn I
Kanta is a yoga and chi kung teacher. Her mindfulness training helps her engage with the natural world as she paints it. “Watching the shadows shift and the colors change is a direct teaching of the transitory nature of all things.” She loves the immediacy of plein air painting and the close relationship to nature you get while you are in the scene as you paint it. Fascinated by dappled light and the challenge of depicting rhythm and movement in a still, two-dimensional format, she completes landscapes on-site. She lives year-round on Martha’s Vineyard where the weather patterns are highly erratic and though she celebrates favorable weather conditions, she equally enjoys painting in what one might consider “bad” weather. “I hope someday that someone might see my work and experience what I felt when I was moved to paint the scene in the first place.”

Always searching for a painting, June Schoppe splits her time exploring the varied sea coasts of the Gulf of Mexico and the shores of Martha’s Vineyard searching for the light, an alluring composition, a story to tell and the iconic images of a place. Equally at home in the studio or en plein air, she uses oils to translate that search into works that speak of time and place, dreams and reminiscence, passing storm and serenity.
